Flackwell Heath will be looking to cap off an impressive season in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division with some silverware when they take on Tring Athletic in the final of the Premier Division Cup this evening.

Courtesy of Fabian Driffill’s 92nd minute finish in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Ardley United, the Heathens booked their place in the competition’s showdown. Tring, meanwhile, overcame Hadley in a penalty shootout to reach the final.

The game gets underway at 7.45pm on Thursday, May 12, hosted at Leverstock Green FC. It’s a great achievement for Flackwell Heath to reach this stage, given that manager Chris Ayres only came to the club with assistant Paul Shone to replace Marcus Richardson in October last year.

Since then, the pair have been able to instil a successful and attractive brand of football at Wilks Park, with the Heathens finishing their league campaign in sixth place, with 21 wins, five draws and 12 losses.

Many of their players have also proved good enough to get transferred to other clubs higher in the football pyramid or even abroad, such as forward Aiden Higgs’ move to play in New Zealand.

Managed by Ryan Sturges, Tring Athletic finished 25 points below the Heathens in 13th place; winning 12, drawing seven, and losing 19 matches.

When the sides met in the league, Ayres’ men won 2-1 away (October 16) but the spoils were shared when they played out a much more even goalless draw at Wilks Park last month.
